Calcium Carbonate in Paint Industry Paints are divided into two categories based on their effects on the environment as Calcium Carbonate in Paint comprises more than 4% of the Earth's crust and is found all over the world. Calcium carbonate is one of the most useful and versatile materials known to man with a wide range of applications. One of these applications is in the paint industry. Calcium carbonate in paint has established itself as the main developer. Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) is commonly used in a number of paint and coating applications. It is used as a developer, an agent to reduce or increase gloss, a rheological modifier and as an additive to paints and coatings. On average, 98% of calcium carbonate in pure limestone paint has been used for many years to produce industrial paints. Calcium carbonate is the main filler for the paint sector. It ensures low oil absorption, easy spreading, long life and resistance to the worst weather conditions, low abrasion, low electrolyte content, pH stabilizer in the paint sector. It affects the tension and fine distribution of the coating particles. Density and particle size distribution affect the opacity of coatings. Titanium dioxide is widely used as a white pigment in the paint industry due to its high refractive index. But its cost is high. Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is replacing it. Calcium carbonate powder coated in the paint increases the light absorption to a certain point. So PCC successfully replaces titanium dioxide. Water-based and solvent-based paints are divided. In water-based paints: Calcium carbonate is used as a filler for the color part up to 70%. In solvent-based paints: Calcium carbonate is used as a filler up to 50%.
